Wednesday, March 30, 2016, 3:03 PM - Solar farms are usually celebrated by environmentalists, but a recent plan by amusement parks corporation Six Flags in New Jersey has some people fuming.

In order to build the farm, the park will have to cut down nearly 15,000 trees in a protected area, an act that "gives green energy a black eye", according to Jeff Tittel of the Sierra Club of New Jersey, via the Asbury Park Press.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that Jackson Township's planning board has granted a request by Six Flags to move forward with the project, despite criticisms the farm will have a 'devastating' impact on the environment.

Jeff Tittel told Asbury Press the project is right, but it's being built in the wrong location.

"You don't destroy a habitat in a forest in the name of clean energy," he said.

    "You have to do both."

A lawyer for Six Flags says the company has scaled back on the proposal in light of the allegations.

"It is never enough with these organizations because it seems to me it's either their way or the highway," Six Flags attorney Raymond Shea told AP.

Five environmental groups are filing a suit against Six Flag, KDC Solar and Jackson Township in hopes of halting the plan.
