Scrap metal find turns out to be $33 million Faberge golden egg

Friday, March 21, 2014, 11:19 AM -

Talk about a golden find!

This ornament purchased by an American scrap dealer at a flea market turned out to be a rare Faberge egg worth millions.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the egg for about $14,000 years ago thinking he could melt it down and turn a profit.

The man got suspicious about its worth after seeing an article online about an Imperial Faberge egg made for Russian royalty.

He contacted a British arts and antiques dealer who verified the egg was genuine and estimated its value at $33 million.

The egg was originally an Easter gift from Russian Tsar Alexander III to his wife in 1887.

The man sold the egg to an unidentified private collector for an undisclosed price.

The new owner is allowing the egg to be put on public display at a London antique dealer from April 14 to 17.

This will be the first time it has been seen in public in 112 years.
