Dead humpback whale found entangled at B.C. fish farm

Saturday, November 19, 2016, 5:14 PM - The carcass of a humpback whale was recently discovered entangled in equipment at an empty fish farm near B.C.'s central coast.

Marine Harvest Canada, B.C.'s largest Atlantic salmon fish farming company, released a statement on Nov. 17 noting that the dead humpback was caught in an anchor support line.

The company says its staff and contractors discovered the whale while dismantling the gear on Nov. 15.

The incident follows a similar case, the company notes, which took place in September 2016. The previous whale was safely released, and the site is now entirely dismantled.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has investigated the incident, and Marine Harvest Canada is examining all fish farms with similar anchoring systems.

According to the company, prior to September's occurrence, no such incident had taken place in its 30 years of operation.
