Has online learning melted away your shot at a 'snow day'?
School districts across the Greater Toronto Area share how online learning is changing the way 'snow days' will be determined this winter.
The anticipation of big winter storms will look different among students across the Greater Toronto Area this year. With online learning being accessible to so many, the weather does not pose as big enough of an issue when it comes to cancelling classes.
“Rather than lose a day of school, we are able to close the school for students and staff and pivot to a remote learning day,” explains Bruce Campbell General Manager of Education at Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. “So that applies to bus cancellations and it would also apply to regular snow days.”
There is not a one size fits all answer. There are multiple decision makers when it comes to the new protocols for a snow day. However, the overall trend shows that more school boards will lean towards online learning when the weather becomes problematic.
