Six fun Earth Hour activities to consider this weekend

Leeanna McLeanReporter

At 8:30 p.m. local time Saturday, switch off your lights to draw attention to the climate and biodiversity crises in Canada and around the world.

Organized by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet. This year marks the 14th anniversary of Earth Hour. The initiative started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories.

“Earth Hour has always drawn its power from the people," event organizers state on their website. "Though global circumstances are different this year due to COVID-19, we still have an incredible opportunity to make an impact - online and from our homes. No matter where you are in the world, you can speak up for nature and bring global attention to the issues facing our planet!"

Here are some other fun ideas:

  1. Grab your telescope and camera and watch the skies. Since the lights will be out in most major cities, this hour will be the perfect opportunity to check out the stars. Throw on a few extra layers, set up some lawn chairs and look for constellations.

CELEBRATE EARTH HOUR AT HOME THIS YEAR WITH THESE FEW SIMPLE IDEAS

  1. Light a candle and get cozy. A room full of candles can be sophisticated, while fewer candles can be great for telling scary stories. If you have children or pets, make sure you keep the candles out of reach.

  2. Take a walk. With warmer weather on the rise and longer days, it's the perfect opportunity to head outside and be active, provided you're practising social distancing.

  3. Catch up on sleep. Daylight Saving Time leaving you tired and groggy? Hit the switch and head to bed.

  4. Spark some conversation by the fire. Grab the guitar, put on some layers and play some tunes around the fire.

  5. Play a board game. Why not break out a deck of cards or some old games? Not only are they fun, but they'll add to your party's energy level.
