Boston Dynamics' robotic reindeer will haunt your dreams

Wednesday, December 23, 2015, 4:52 PM - Boston Dynamics -- an engineering firm that develops state-of-the-art military robots -- has turned one of its flagship technologies into a set of creepy reindeer, capable of pulling Santa's sled.

While the reindeer may have you thinking more about Hallowe'en than Christmas, the technology involved in them is nothing short of impressive.

The 'reindeer' are actually units of military equipment called BigDog which was developed in 2005. BigDog functions as a robotic 'mule' for soldiers conducting on-foot missions. It can carry an impressive 340 lbs and moves at a speed of 6 kilometres per hour.

The robots are capable of maintaining stability through rough terrain -- an incredible feat of engineering.

Here's another look at the BigDog in action:

Boston Dyanmics is behind several other animal-inspired technologies including the Cheetah, which can reach speeds of 45 kilometres per hour.

The firm owned by Google. It originated at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology in 1992.
