Still hope for a White Christmas for BC's Lower Mainland

Wednesday, December 23, 2015, 10:39 AM - It's been a hot topic, especially for those in eastern Canada hoping for a White Christmas. As it stands now, the city of Vancouver has a better chance of seeing snow this Christmas than major cities like Toronto and Montreal.

A series of storms have been impacting the coast for the past several weeks bringing heavy rain, snow and damaging winds. After a brief break from the stormy conditions Tuesday morning, another wave of moisture combined with colder air will bring the chance for mixing through the Vancouver area.

"Light rain expected for the south coast on Wednesday with 10-15 mm of rain possible in Vancouver," says Weather Network meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg. "Freezing levels will steadily drop giving the chance for some mixing or flakes Wednesday night into Thursday morning for the Lower Mainland with temperatures hovering at or just above the freezing mark." 

That's great news for ski resorts that have been experiencing some of the best early conditions in years.

Outdoor enthusiasts from the east are flocking to both BC and Alberta with little to no snow on the ground in Ontario and Quebec.

Tour companies say they're scrambling to find last minute accommodations for those eager to hit the slopes over the holidays.

"A dry and cool day is forecast for Christmas for the province and Boxing Day travel looks to be ideal," says Sonnenburg. "Sunday is when the next system will move into the coast."
